Somehow, my interaction with the deaf couple the other day seems to have left an impact. I havent been able to get them out of my mind ever since.
Did you know that Sign Language is not Universal? I wonder why I thought it would be..
Just like all other languages of the world, Sign Languages vary from one region to another.
Ever since I was a child, I remember being hooked to the t.v set every Sunday afternoon. Just before the regional films at 2pm, there would be a weekly news telecast for the deaf. Anybody remember that? I remember looking on,fascinated. I would wonder how people communicate without words.
I still do.
Its different from sharing a moment of quiet, is it not?
I for one, continue to remain vocal. Very vocal. Although that`s not to say that I havent had my moments of quiet, when just a look or a smile or a lingering touch has spoken a thousand words.
But I wonder if that kind of silence is any different from the one this couple shares? What about you? How intense is your need to be vocal?

I cannot imagine what I would do without words - mine and others'.
silence out of choice and silence by luck, these two are very different, its like,..I normally dont take much of the pickle, but when doctor forbids me, i feel a strong desire for it:), I would feel completely suffocated without voice, though normally i don have any person to converse the whole day:)

Renu: Point very well made. Silence by destiny is very different. And the reason it means so much to us is pbly the fact that we have a choice here.
We take the gift of speech so much for granted! It is a gift indeed!
There was a hindi movie "Khamoshi" starring Nana patekar, manisha koirala on a deaf couple. The movie was a commercial flop but the treatment of the characters was beautiful. Worth a watch and of course the songs and the lyrics are magical too!

i remember that program too and i wanted to learn sign language then. the language not being universal is a surprise to me too. it's a scary thought to not be able to hear or speak. i had a mouth infection once and could not speak for a day. that was so difficult
I love talking- words, singing- lyrics, humming- melodies. They are all expressions of what we feel and the need to acknowledge those moments.
I have my quite moments too but those too are times when I articulate my thoughts and understanding of the world around and inside me.
A quiet smile n wink moments are there coz at times they work the best. More, Importantly, when I choose silence its by choice.
Sign language is a way of expressing ones feeling, I guess I will put them in word group because for some they are.
Holding of hands, quiet smiles and naughty winks are the same for everyone with feelings.
i agree! i think there's a diff between choosing to stay silent and having to stay silent by force...there r times when i really dont want to talk and would rather just think in my head...and others when u cannot keep me shut even if my life depended on it!!
I like silence a lot. Prefer that to idle talk. But unless you are with a person who can understand and interpret the silence in the right way, it canonly be uncomfortable...
Anyways i didn't know that sign language wasn't universal! Interesting!

I remember the afternoon news. I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. I always wanted to learn sign language. Maybe I should do that now.
By the way, EGYPT was amazing. We just got back 4 days back. I loved loved loved it!
Yeah remember that. My older one knows basic sign languages, like saying out her name in sign lang, alphabets in sign lang ( They are taught sign lang at school, many schools here do that, don't know exact reason), she finds it very exciting but I am not able to get a hang of it.
About the Puli, sankranti seitai mone chilo na, tomar comment dekhe mone porlo. Ami janio na puli korte. Pati sapta jeita korechilam oita soja, kintu ami oto patla korte pari na.

I didn't know that sign language was not universal... And for me, I am extremely talkative and I do at times take it for granted by not even thinking about it. :(
I guess we all need to appreciate it a little bit more.
oh, its one of my greatest fears.
oMy Mom used to work with a blind boy - record his lessons onto a tape recorder so that he could convert it to Braille...and my interaction wth him left me humbled...

And I remmeber tht 2pm news...I used to sit & carefully watch the lady & memorise the signs carefully.
I knew quite a bit then...or so I thought:-D....but now I cant remember even a sign except for Pradhaan mantri & America:-D
Then there's tht old movie "Koshish" starring J Bhaduri & Sanjeev Kumar......lovely movie.

Sandeepa: how cool is that! I have started looking for some online courses in sign language. I cant fathom why they would teach sign language to everyone in school though!
Anudivya: Its not a matter of appreciating it really. I cant imagine if I didnt have a choice. But that`s because I do have one. Its so easy to take the lil things for granted.
Serendipity: Incidentally, that`s another thing I have been wondering about. Would it be easy for us to pick up Braille? Just wondering..
